Place bread and 1 cup milk in 1 1/2-quart baking dish; soak until soft. Add sugar and eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Add butter, vanilla, and remaining milk. Bake at 350°, or until custard is firm and a knife inserted in center comes out clean.
